Alternative Mission Statement- The
Positive Alternatives Team seeks to empower Telluride’s youth to make
positive choices in their lives, to reduce their involvement in high-risk
behaviors and to educate as well as involve our community in creating a
safe, positive, and supportive environment in which our youth can mature
and thrive. Excellence
come naturally…it’s all about choices Principles
and Values Statement
The
members of the Positive Alternatives Team (PAT) share a belief in the
following principles: The PAT is a group of parents, educators, students, and other community stakeholders who believe that our youth represent our future. To the extent that our youth thrive, Telluride—and beyond—will thrive.
Every child in
the Telluride region deserves to grow up in a safe, positive, and
supportive environment.
Every family in the Telluride region deserves to enjoy fun, drug
and alcohol free events in our community.
Positive role
models in the community are essential for our children and every adult is
a role model for children in our community.
There is a
clear relationship between assets, as defined and reported in the Asset
Survey, and high-risk behaviors-the more assets a child can claim, the
fewer high-risk behaviors they engage in.
All young
people in our community should have the opportunity to develop as many
positive assets as possible and the adults in the community must insure
that our community provides the opportunities to develop those assets.
Illicit drug
use, underage alcohol use, and other high-risk behaviors, are symptoms of
a greater problem in the community. These
challenges facing our youth are community issues, which demand
community-wide solutions. Goals
and Activities
To
continue to sponsor, promote, and organize the annual drug and alcohol
education program in the Telluride schools. To
develop parent education programs focusing on parenting skills,
communication skills, and drug and alcohol awareness programs. To
develop and organize other activities for Telluride’s families and youth
that offer an alternative to drug and alcohol based events. To
promote the Asset Survey results and to help the community to develop
programs
that build assets in our youth population. Send comments, suggestions to telluridepositivealternatives@earthlink.net
