Eleventh Annual Benchmark Invitational Golf Tournament by Betsy
Lindsay
The Eleventh Annual Benchmark Invitational Golf Tournament was July 31,
and Aug 1, 2004 at the Telluride Ski and Golf Club.
The weather cooperated beautifully for golf and the Friday night outdoor party and Calcutta hosted again by Ron & Joyce Allred. Nelson and Sharon Sharp opened up their lovely home again this year for the Friday night opening dinner and the evening festivities concluded Sunday night with the awards presentation and entertainment by the Anders Brothers Band at Allred’s Restaurant. The
invitational event was closed with 92 golfers participating and several remaining on the wait list. As in past years, the course was set up with most interesting pin placements and different tee box locations made for challenging play.
This year’s Low Gross winners were Kevin Burke and partner Shelley Earl. Second place went to Mike Loehr and JoAnn Weisel and Third Place was captured by Jim Blixt and Maggie Choice. .
The Low Net winners were Mike Loehr and JoAnn Weisel. Second Place went to Kevin Burke and Shelley Earl and Third Place was captured by Mike Plank and Margaret Rinkevich.
This year’s winners were determined by less than a point in both Gross and Net divisions.
Prizes were awarded for longest drives, closest to the pin and straightest drive. The Grand Prize of $15,000 for the hole-in-one which was not won, was sponsored by Abrams Development Company. Other prize awards were provided by Hotel Telluride, Harmon’s Restaurant, Tubac Golf Resort, Allred’s Restaurant and Wyndham Peaks resort.
The Calcutta held in conjunction with this event raised over $76,000. The Benchmark Invitational is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Some participants have contributed additional funds directly to the Benchmark that can be used to support the Benchmark’s two programs. The Benchmark Partners use the funds to support a Junior Golf Program that is open to all youths in the Telluride School District and to underwrite the very successful Benchmark Scholarship Fund. The Junior Golf Program currently has 34 youths enrolled in the summer program under the direction of Chris Neylan. Six of these participants will be going to the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wi. In mid-August and part of the expenses per student will be paid by the Benchmark. The Scholarship Fund is presently providing financial support to seven graduates of Telluride High School who are receiving over $40,000 in scholarship aid. The success of this event continues to grow each summer benefiting additional students in this very deserving area.
The Partners thank all of the participants and contributors for supporting this worthy cause and look forward to seeing everyone again next year. |
